Wow, Marvel keeps making hit after hit. The powerhouse absolutely knocks it out of the park with its newest movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. After following the same formula for their movies since 2008, a person would think this would grow old. The mix of action, comedy, and drama still manages to get better and better, though.
The best part of the movie is its ensemble cast. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper have amazing chemistry as Starlord, Gamora, Drax, Groot, and Rocket Raccoon. From Rocket’s constant hijinks to Drax’s complete seriousness to Groot’s one line repeated over and over, these characters really feel like they have spent a lot of time with each other.
The sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy also manages to improve on just about every other aspect as well. The action is turned up to eleven, and that’s saying something. By the end of the movie, there is an explosion every five seconds. The comedy clicks almost every time as well. Marvel really knows how to keep the lighthearted moments going, and even shows off how to properly transition from dramatic to comedy. Speaking of drama, the sequel has it in spades. The main focus is on Starlord and the return of his father. It’s a personal tale that really lets the audience learn what drives his character. By the ending, expect to really care for him and his team.
The final thing that needs addressed is the music. The first movie had a wonderful soundtrack, and the sequel adds to the pot. The Electric Light Orchestra, Looking Glass, Fleetwood Mac, and George Harrison appear on the list, and that’s only a few. Old hits are used perfectly, and show a whole new generation of people just how good old music can be.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 surpasses the original in just about every way. Marvel once again sets the standard for superhero movies, and continues to build excitement for each new movie. Guardians 2 shows that sequels don’t always ruin a movie, and can actually build on what made the first a hit.
